Although fat is essential to the body and should not be completely eliminated from the body, it is important to choose the right types of fat in order to benefit your health. Unsaturated fats should be chosen over saturated fats. Saturated fats are normally animal sources of fat and more solid at room temperature. These include butter, whole milk, or the marbleized fat in steak. The healthier fats, unsaturated fats, are more liquid at room temperature. These include olive oil, corn oil, and sesame oil. It is recommended to keep saturated fats under 10% of the calories from your diet. It is also important to identify and avoid trans fats. These fats have been linked to diabetes, clogged arteries, and heart disease. Trans fats are found in foods people typically identify as “being bad for you” such as cookies, doughnuts, fried food, and high fat packaged snacks. It is recommended to intake less than 1% of your calories from trans fats.
